Theology Talk

Ever thought that “God! Your word is confusing.”
I know I have, lets clear some of our doubts today :)

Someone just ask me this on Sunday, my response, “I really don’t know” but hey that’s where we searched through out all our books for answers come in.

Tongues Are For Unbelievers

1 Cor 14, Paul was writing about the importance of tongue, and how it benefits the believer but is of no benefit to the unbelievers, then there pop up this verse (v22)

22Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers; prophecy, however, is for believers, not for unbelievers.

So Paul, is tongues for the believes or the unbelievers? Make up your mind!!

Below a great article by Jason Dulle on this…

Paul said, "So then, tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers. Prophecy, however, is not for unbelievers but for believers" (I Corinthians 14:22). Does Paul mean to say that tongues are not intended for believers? To answer this question we must examine the immediate context of this verse:

Brothers and sisters, do not be children in your thinking. Instead, be infants in evil, but in your thinking be mature. 21 It is written in the law: "By people with strange tongues and by the lips of strangers I will speak to this people, yet not even in this way will they listen to me," says the Lord. 22 So then, tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers. Prophecy, however, is not for unbelievers but for believers (I Corinthians 14:20-22, NET Bible).

First Corinthians 14:21 is a quote from Isaiah 28:11. Paul cited this verse to illustrate the point he was trying to make. It was from the Isaiah passage that Paul concluded tongues are a sign to unbelievers. In order to understand Paul’s statement, then, we must examine the context of Isaiah 28, for Paul drew upon its meaning to derive his own teaching for the church at Corinth.

Israel had broken their covenant with Yahweh, falling into idol worship. The priests were drunkards. God had attempted many times to bring Israel back into a right covenant relationship with Him but they would not heed His call, and were so far spiritually removed from Him that He could not get His message across. In Isaiah 28:2-6 we find Isaiah prophesying that the Assyrian army was going to invade Israel and ravish them. Since the priests and prophets of Israel had become drunkards, they were not spiritually capable of listening to God's voice, and thus were making bad decisions (v. 7). Who could God get His message to if the priests and prophets are not even in right relationship with Him to be able to hear His voice? Can he get communicate it to those who were in a state of spiritual infancy (v.9)? God could only give them small bits and pieces of His will because they were so spiritually immature (v.10).1 Because God could not communicate His message to Israel any other way, He would send those of another tongue (language) to relay the message (v.11). These messengers were none other than the Assyrian army. The message they were to deliver to Israel was none other than that they had broken their covenant with Yahweh. God would make sure they received His message by allowing them to be defeated of another nation. It was through the foreign tongues that God would speak to His people.

In what way would God communicate His message through the Assyrian tongue? The Israelites would be carried captive by the Assyrians to their own land. Every time the Israelites would hear the Assyrians speak in the Assyrian tongue it would remind them that they were defeated and carried away captive because of their failure to love Yahweh and keep His covenant.

God told the Israelites how he had offered them rest and refreshing from their enemies time and time again, yet they would never listen to Him. They kept up their sinfulness. Therefore, God was no longer able to keep them in the state of rest (v.12) Because the Lord could only speak to the Israelites by bits and pieces and couldn't get His whole message across to them, the Israelites would fall backward, be snared, and taken captive by the Assyrians (v.13).

As the prophecy had stated, the Assyrians invaded Israel and destroyed it, taking the Israelites captive. Most Israelites still did not repent, but they most definitely received His message. Instead of repenting they simply grew accustomed to the Assyrians, and even began to marry them and have children by them.

Having now established the meaning of Isaiah 28:11, let us examine Paul’s usage of this text in his letter to the Corinthians.

Notice the parallel of I Corinthians 14:20 to Isaiah 28. Paul told the Corinthians not to be like children, or immature, (like Israel was, who needed line upon line, here a little there a little, precept upon precept), but to be mature. In verse 22, by using the principle of Isaiah 28:11, Paul said, "So also tongues are for a sign for unbelievers today."2 Remember, God told Israel that with men who speak other languages, He would communicate His message to them. Paul, therefore, says that tongues serve a similar purpose today. When an unbeliever hears a believer speaking in tongues, it is a sign to the unbeliever of their rejection of God, and will serve to condemn them on the day of judgment. God will hold them accountable for their unbelief because God expects the sign, and planned for the sign of tongues to convince them and make them believe and be converted, speaking in tongues themselves. Notice that even Jesus connected speaking in tongues with a sign in Mark 16:17.

God expects tongues to convince the unbeliever because speaking in languages which have never been learned cannot be faked, and therefore cannot be denied by unbelievers. It is possible to fake a miracle, prophecy, or word of knowledge. One cannot, however, fake speaking in languages they do not naturally know, without it being obvious.

God has given tongues as the evidence of receiving the Holy Ghost so that unbelievers will believe when they hear believers speaking in tongues. If they do not believe God will use their experience to condemn them in judgment for not believing. Tongues will either excuse or accuse the unbelievers who hear them, at the judgment.

That tongues serve the above purpose does not mean that tongues are not for believers also. Granted, if believers were not to speak in tongues, how could unbelievers ever hear tongues in order to be convinced of their rejection of God? Obviously unbelievers will not be the ones speaking in tongues.. It must be the believers who are speaking in tongues. Also, Jesus’ statement that tongues would follow those who believe would become a contradiction (Mark 16:17). Yet another point to bring out is that immediately following Paul's statement that tongues are for unbelievers, he noted that prophecy is for believers, not unbelievers (v. 22). But then Paul went on to show how prophecy would avail to the conversion of unbelievers (vs. 23-25). If we take Paul's statement that tongues are only for unbelievers to mean that tongues serve no purpose for believers, then we must also consider Paul's blanket statement concerning prophecy in verse 22 to mean that prophecy serves no purpose for unbelievers. The context of verse 22, however, renders both positions untenable. There is a larger context to verse 22 that we must take into consideration in our interpretation.

In the very same chapter that we find Paul making the statement that tongues are for unbelievers, he also makes several statements which clearly indicate that tongues are for believers: tongues and interpretation serve to edify the church (I Corinthians 14:27-28); the individual who speaks in tongues edifies himself (14:4); Paul, a believer, prayed and sang in tongues (14:15); to give thanks in tongues is to give thanks well (14:17); Paul thanked God he spoke in tongues more than the Corinthians (14:18); tongues should not be forbidden among the church (14:39). All these verses describe the tongues of believers. If tongues were not for believers, but only unbelievers, then most of I Corinthians 14 would be in error.

In conclusion, in verse twenty-two Paul is focusing on the fact that the sign of tongues does not serve to convince the believer, but rather the unbeliever. As Jesus noted, however, those who come to believe would then have the sign of tongues following them.

Fig tree mystery

Then of course there is the fig tree mystery, where Jesus curse the tree for it’s fruitlessness even when it’s not the tree’s fault, it’s NOT the fig season!!! Is Jesus throwing a fitsy? Maybe He’s just human after all.

Some light is shed on this passage by an article in Hard Sayings of the Bible by F. F. Bruce:

Was it not unreasonable to curse the tree for being fruitless when, as Mark expressly says, "it was not the season for figs"? The problem is most satisfactorily cleared up in a discussion called "The Barren Fig Tree" published many years ago by W. M. Christie, a Church of Scotland minister in Palestine under the British mandatory regime. He pointed out first the time of year at which the incident is said to have occurred (if, as is probable, Jesus was crucified on April 6th, A.D. 30, the incident occurred during the first days of April). "Now," wrote Christie, "the facts connected with the fig tree are these. Toward the end of March the leaves begin to appear, and in about a week the foliage coating is complete. Coincident with [this], and sometimes even before, there appears quite a crop of small knobs, not the real figs, but a kind of early forerunner. They grown to the size of green almonds, in which condition they are eaten by peasants and others when hungry. When they come to their own indefinite maturity they drop off." These precursors of the true fig are called taqsh  in Palestinian Arabic. Their appearance is a harbinger of the fully formed appearance of the true fig some six weeks later. So, as Mark says, the time for figs had not yet come. But if the leaves appear without any taqsh,  that is a sign that there will be no figs. Since Jesus found "nothing but leaves" - leaves without any taqsh- he knew that "it was an absolutely hopeless, fruitless fig tree" and said as much.
F. F. Bruce goes on to describe the cursing of the fig tree as a real-life parable that emphasized the spoken parable of the fig tree in Luke 13:6-9. It is also likely that Jesus, knowing in advance that his disciples would be surprised by the quick effect his curse had, used the fig tree to provoke their reaction and thus make the lesson about faith more memorable.

Reprogramming our belief system

We all have a set of belief system that we live our lives by. Windows is always a better buy than mac, that's where I stand and this will not change until there is a greater revelation that overule the one I live by at this season in life.

The truth is, if we don't allow the Word of God to invade our system; culture, traditions, ideas, words and other external influence will build it's stronghold within us.

John 15:7
7If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you.

Psalm 119:105
105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.

Our lives need to be One with His word, it's simple as that, every fibre of our being needs to cry out for more of His word! However, hearing a sermon or reading the bible don't always fulfill this goal. Psalm 119:105, what's the point of God lighting our path and we not walk it? Unless we personalize what we hear or read, making it our own and living our lives on that we've learnt, a sermon will remain just like any other ads we see on TV-a passing image.

Was really encouraged by one of my brothers blogging his stand on relationships. It's not that good theology or high standards he has that encourages me most but just him making a point to act on what he believes.

Today, we might not have the best belief systems or theology. Our beliefs, thoughts, opinions might change over time... However, let not this stop us from acting on what we believe... Faith without action is dead....

Let's lay hands on our faith and resurrect that little mustard seed of ours!

Deciphering the Prophecies

The prophets are just amazing, their sharpness in hearing the voice of God is simply mind-blowing, all my prayers are confirmed and answered in just that 9 minutes long prophetic word. God has been speaking and I have been hearing right, yay God! Exciting days ahead!

Prophesies

John Jacks

Son I have given onto you a heart of a shepherd, I have caused that come within your heart a determination that which is the house of God, that which is of the kingdom of God, that of which is of the heart of Jesus, is alive and it has life to it and it's life-giving. I am going to cause you to be one who will feed others. There is a season coming upon you, a season upon you, that I’m going to give upon you others that are young in years that you will be one who will pour into them an exuberance and with life, like a youth thing you know, the whole dynamic of youth and God is going to cause that life within you to bring blessing and to encouragement, but it's going to be backed up by not just having a good time or bringing of life but its backed up by a shepherd's heart and a caring heart, one who will reach in and nurture, strengthened, help, counsel, bring that which will bring stability, that which will bring rescue, even when the one that goes astray, that capacity to go out to find that one and hold him back in and all of those things that the shepherd does, the lord is bringing those things into your heart, your life to see the house of God, the purposes of God and those who are trusted into your care regardless of age, will see them well cared for, well strengthened, well prepared, well taught, well fed. I'm going to broadened you, I am going to put more weight upon you, I'm going to put more responsibility upon you with that will come a mention of authority but do not become arrogant with authority but take on the weight of responsibility for I am going to cause you to be one who has great impact and as those who are young in years come impacted by, the days will come you will not be just those who are young in years but there will be many who will be impacted by that caring heart and that which I have develop within you that capacity to be shepherd, that capacity to be strength, that capacity to feed, that capacity to enjoy the joy of God, I can see people prosper in the things of God.

Monette Jacks

Very Creative, you have all kinds of ideas, I can see ideas forming around in your head, things that will work out, ways to get people to listen, and I just really see that God is going to give you, God is going to give you ideas, he's going to give you a creativeness of of.. The creativeness build in you, you going to be able to used to attract people to come into the kingdom, and you just, you just.. I can't believe that you've got so many ideas, *laughs*

Ya that's some that were God, they really are God. Don't get distracted, sometimes you think that will never work, God can do the impossible, you look to God to do the impossible because sometimes you can't do it, this is true, but God can do them all. He is bringing you into a new relationship with Him. Not just seeing, He's opening up your heart and begin to put compassion in you, and loving and a new dimension, not the one that you have and is going to be, its its for a season, i don't think its forever, its for a season to begin to see how he feels about His people. The way He feels about them, the way he cares for them and I just think that He's doing that just for a season but you will understand the heart of God and the way He love us, and the way he love you. He loves you, and it's that sometimes you wonder if you are all alone, you are not all alone because God is right there beside you saying son I love you and I am very pleased with you.

End: I see songs, I hear God says write your songs down; don't leave them up in the air.

John Tiplady

Alright I just see that God has placed upon you a uniqueness and sometimes you feel Lord Urm.. How I fit in? I'm different and you recognize that. But you know God's going to give you a boldness to be who you are in Him. And that creativity and that ability, I don't know, you think different from a lot of people, you know it's not sort of that math’s, there's only one answer to you there is many ways. And God is going to use the many ways. You know the things that I saw was that you are going to become one that's able to tell the story of the gospel, but its in an unusual way, it's almost like you’ve become a story teller and I just see you with an acting ability and an ability to just... and people are captivated by "What's he going to do next? Where's this all going? And they are on the edge of their seat and yet there's a punch line, a way of just portraying the truth of the gospel. I believe that creativity is not only in that upfront area but I believe also that your days lie ahead, God is going to cause you to, get things smoothened out, I believe there's even books to be written for the kingdom of God and its entirely different from anything that has ever been said before. There's a unique call upon your life, it's unique about you, it's unique in a way that God has made you and the way that you think and that is God. Alright, there's nobody else that is like you. Actually there's nobody else like any of us that has ever lived on the face of the earth, we're unique, but you are a little more unique than many *laughs* yeah God's peculiar people, that's what makes the kingdom of God, you know I’m excited about this life, i think wow, the potential, cause we are not approaching things from the way that people normally approach them, there's a new thing coming forth. God says behold I’ll do a new thing is going to spring forth, suddenly people are going to go wow, we've never seen that before, but it's going to impact the kingdom of God, that's the important thing, man I am, this is going to be interesting to see what comes forth.

Commentary

Shepherds heart

heart of a shepherd, I have caused that come within your heart a determination that which is the house of God

This has been in line with what God has been speaking to me lately. On the importance of Love, and how which only through love that I can serve in His kingdom. One note love, God grace me to be that vessel of Love.

nurture, strengthened, help, counsel, bring that which will bring stability, that which will bring rescue, even when the one that goes astray, that capacity to go out to find that one and hold him back in and all of those things that the shepherd does, the lord is bringing those things into your heart, your life to see the house of God, the purposes of God and those who are trusted into your care regardless of age, will see them well cared for, well strengthened, well prepared, well taught, well fed

I have always been troubled with helping backsliders. How much effort should I invest in getting them back to His house? Should I abandon the entire flock to find them? With more of God’s creative ideas, I’m sure I will find a way :)

I have been crying out day and night for this, I can’t love my neighbor as myself… Lord you don’t know how much I love myself. A heart for my sheeps, a heart for the lost, I need to feel how you feel about them. With my currently love capacity, it’s just not enough. Pray with me for this breakthrough.

Creativity

all kinds of ideas you've got so many ideas

Oh you don’t want to ever read my mind, if there’s a machine that counts the thoughts per second in my brain; it will probably have off-scale readings all the time! It’s overwhelming, seriously!

ways to get people to listen, and I just really see that God is going to give you

you are going to become one that's able to tell the story of the gospel, but its in an unusual way, it's almost like you’ve become a story teller and I just see you with an acting ability and an ability to just... and people are captivated by "What's he going to do next? Where's this all going? And they are on the edge of their seat and yet there's a punch line, a way of of just portraying the truth of the gospel.

I think this creativity focused a lot on words, on presenting the gospel. I have noticed lately during my CDS teaching that God has graced me to be able to present His word in a practical and yet biblical sense. I can never do that before. I’m amazed with myself, on what comes out of my mouth.

Uniqueness

uniqueness and sometimes you feel Lord Urm.. How I fit in? I'm different and you recognize that. But you know God's going to give you a boldness to be who you are in Him.

to you there is many ways

unique call upon your life, it's unique about you, it's unique in a way that God has made you and the way that you think and that is God. Alright, there's nobody else that is like you.

but you are a little more unique than many

God's peculiar people

God says behold I’ll do a new thing is going to spring forth, suddenly people are going to go wow, we've never seen that before, but it's going to impact the kingdom of God, that's the important thing

You don’t need to be a prophet to know that, I’m different, and yes I thank God for that boldness to make my stand. Seriously why bother to live a Christian life when there is no drastic difference from the life of the world? *Smiles* A new thing indeed, I see the hands of God moving in many different areas of my life. I’m prepared to live life very differently =)

Things to do

I see songs, I hear God says write your songs down; don't leave them up in the air.

Hey God, my songs go up to heaven ok! It doesn’t go into the air!! I really should write them down, God have been speaking to me this for a very long time.

I believe there's even books to be written for the kingdom of God and its entirely different from anything that has ever been said before.

Oh a book! A book! When? When? My sis was giving me the idea, “God certified weirdo”, that would be different from what has been said before =) Can’t wait, God speak to me more about this.

I just see you with an acting ability and an ability to just... and people are captivated by "What's he going to do next? Where's this all going?

Acting, Mmmm… Mmmmm…. Mmmmm….

Warnings

I'm going to put more responsibility upon you with that will come a mention of authority but do not become arrogant with authority but take on the weight of responsibility for I am going to cause you to be one who has great impact

Pride, an area I have to always keep myself in check. It’s part of being different, many of times I don’t seek as much counsel as I should have. Sticking to what I think is right, which most of the time is the case haha. kiddin’

People, keep me in check on this ok?
